There is a saying, “sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me.” This saying means a person can hurt another person physically by punching or kicking him, but an individual will never hurt him physically with words. A truer way of saying it would be, “Sticks and stones can break my bones but words will really hurt me”. This phrase emphasizes that verbal criticism hurts more than physical pain because it makes us feel that we’re not valuable or we are not as good as others around us. There are so many people who have been hurt by others’ dreadful words. I know this to be true because I have witnessed a person who committed suicide due to another’s fearful words. I also know a girl who starved herself to death due to her mother’s awful words and a guy who always regret for saying, “I hate you” to his mother. When someone jokes around by calling his friends fat or ugly, she’ll never knows that the ones being teased take it very seriously. Sticks and stones will break our bones, but words will really hurt us because we start to believe that the words are true.
