1. I think the the best way is to travel by car. You can see many different towns and villages, stay where you want and spend there as much time as you want. You don't need to harry up risking to miss your train or plane.
2. It is more important to have a car if you live in the country. City has huge traffic problems and people very often leave their cars and go to their offices by the public transport. If you live in the country you need to go to the city sometimes or even often if you work there. It's more convenient to do it by car.
