John Dickens was sent to prison for debt in 1824, and Charles Dickens had to forget about education and to go to work at factory. In 1836-1837 he wrote a humorous series of sketches "The Pickwick Papers" which became very popylar. Within a few years he was considered to be one of the most humorous and succesfull authors of his time.
