На будущее, если идет последовательность действий, то это Past Simple, если действие в процессе, то Past Continious (Например, когда я пришел, мама мыла посуду. Мама мыла посуду будет в Past Cont, так как действие в процессе.) Обычно после слова While тоже употребляется Past Continious
