1. The mother asked if she promised not to play with the ball in the street.
To convert the sentence into reported speech, we need to change the introductory verb from "said" to "asked" and transform the direct speech into a question. In this case, the question is "Do you promise not to play with the ball in the street?" so we add "if" before the question.

2. The man asked the clerk behind the counter if it was true that train 35 is late.
Similarly, we change the verb from "asked" to "asked" and transform the direct speech into a question. The question is "Is it true that train 35 is late?" so we change it into reported speech while maintaining the verb tense.

3. The porter asked the passengers where their luggage was.
Again, we change the verb from "asked" to "asked" and transform the direct speech into a question. The question is "Where is your luggage?" so we change it into reported speech.

4. The woman asked the girl if train 17 leaves at 6 or at 7 p.m.
We follow the same process as in the previous examples. The question is "Does train 17 leave at 6 or at 7 p.m.?" so we convert it into reported speech.

5. The boy asked his mother which plane was theirs.
Continuing with the same process, the question is "Which plane is ours?" so we change it into reported speech.

6. The man asked his friend if he agreed to go there by plane.
Following the same steps, the question is "Do you agree to go there by plane?" so we convert it into reported speech.

7. Mother asked Jane what she was doing there.
The question "What are you doing here?" is changed into reported speech, maintaining the verb tense and changing the introductory verb from "asked" to "asked."

8. Ann asked Mary what she usually had for breakfast.
The question "What do you usually have for breakfast?" is converted into reported speech using the same process as before.

9. The inspector asked who caused the accident.
Here, the reported speech doesn't involve a question, so we don't need to transform it. We change the introductory verb from "asked" to "asked" and keep the sentence as it is.

10. Margaret asked Richard where he was going for his holidays.
Similarly, the question "Where are you going for your holidays?" is converted into reported speech by changing the verb tense and the introductory verb.
