The Bastille was a medieval(1)
that was used as a prison in
Paris. It was (2)
built as a gate during the Hundred Years' War
but was later expanded in order to (3)
- the city. The Bastille

_and walls that were 25 metres high. Many of the

who were kept there were important people and not just
common criminals. The king could (6)
people to be sent there
and even families could ask for a member to be kept there for various reasons. On
July 14th, 1789, at the beginning of the French Revolution, an angry crowd of people
attacked and took over the Bastille. This (7)

the end of the old system of government. July 14th, or Bastille Day, is now celebrated
as a national holiday in France. The prison no longer stands because it was destroyed
during the French Revolution, but its (8)
has lived on and it
has become the subject of many stories and films.
